Here is the basis of the petition:

Colleges are accepting single parent students who are homeless and/or living in shelters and encouraging them to take out student loans and grants to pay for college.  Once in college, there are no family housing or vouchers available.

This typically means that the single parent family will drop out of school, still homeless and with student loans to pay back ( and perhaps unable to gain a Pell Grant again). This practice  places the students in a worse financial position than before they started school.

Colleges also do not specifically track single parent families from admissions to graduation because the drop out rate will negatively skew the graduation "success" numbers.

We urge Congress and the President to fund housing vouchers ( partial or full) for this vulnerable population who are making the right decision to complete their education and raise their family out of poverty and onto a successful path of self sustaining.

 

When we can support families in their education goals by bringing safe housing within reach, then we will stop ,as a society , penalizing people for being single parents.  It is time to require the colleges , when they accept Federal Student Loan monies to partner with the government and business communities to create housing programs that will increase the chances of single parents success to move toward graduation.

Conchetta House believes that the best way to help a child to college is to invite them to the graduation of their parents.
